In the beginning there was Adam.
No, not the beginning of Genesis, but the beginning of Access Design & Print. It was 2001, and Adam was five years out of college (Go JMU Dukes!) and had just left an entry level job as a phone book graphic designer. Yes, this was back in the days of PHONE BOOKS.
He started small—as in very small. Just one computer and a handful of clients who liked his design work from the phone book. His wife Cathy was a bartender by day and community college professor by night, but, as Adam carved out a little niche for himself, he asked her to leave her jobs and join forces with him. It took five years of asking, but one night after a particularly brutal bartending shift that ended with a customer puking on Cathy’s shoes, she agreed to give it a go.
By 2007 Cathy and Adam had a (somewhat) legitimate office space and a baby boy. They brought their son Sam to the office every day, and Cathy became a pro at nursing a baby while answering the phone. Business was growing and so were they. They found a storefront in Kitty Hawk to move Access Design & Print into just as Cathy was pregnant with baby #2.
Adam and Cathy met Dave Rollins, who would go on to become Access Design & Print’s art director, at a child’s birthday party in 2011 (isn’t that how all young parents make new friends?). With his graphic design expertise, he was the perfect complement to the budding business.
Fast forward to today and sooo much has changed. In the years between, Access Design & Print has:
Added a whole host of services to make Access Design & Print a complete design-print-promo-sign company.
Access Design & print has grown as a team and as a business, and their client base has grown along with them. Over the years, they’ve seen mom-and-pop businesses blossom, bartenders become restaurant owners, and real estate agents start their own companies. They’ve sponsored big community events like the Duck Jazz Festival, the Mustang Music Festival, and the Outer Banks Marathon. And they’ve situated Access Design & Print smack-dab in the middle of Kill Devil Hills with Baldwin Video and K. Wilkins Photography in their office building so that they can offer clients an easy and reliable one-stop solution to just about everything advertising-related.
It’s been a wild ride, and it’s just beginning.
